On July 17th, 2010, an inter-generational meeting was held at the KI EcoCenter . During this weekly meeting which is held every Saturday at eleven 0′clock of members of the center and the ranging from ages 14 to 67, a discussion was held over an article The Mind To Lead by Suzanne Kryder. The article was about the sciences of leadership dealing with the brain, state of mind, and memory and incorporating those into your daily routine and the way you think. Going around the table, each member gave what they absorbed from reading the article. Here are a few statements from the college members of the community.
Arie, a graduate of Ivy Tech in web design, who works in her profession as the web designer at the KI EcoCenter, gave us a piece of the article which she found quite intriguing.
“A top-down is when your memory and past experiences prevents you from learning in your current experience. ”
Menelik, the director of the Eco Camp held at the KI EcoCenter and also a senior at IUPUI majoring in psychology also shared what he absorbed.
“A bottom-up experience is realizing the situation for what it is and being mindful of it. It is to pay attention to the ideas that you produce and to be conscious of your thoughts. In an example from the article, a woman spilled milk all over important papers. At first, she was angry and frustrated with herself, but because she was conscious of her experiences, she was able to control her anger and laugh at her angry thoughts. I think that’s key to true consciousness.”
Jerome Lawrence, a student at Ivy Tech and also the after school director at the KI EcoCenter, absorbed this:
” People need to live life in the moment. By not living in the present and in the past (in memories and past experiences) or in the future (plans and events for the future), people miss out on lessons and experiences in life.
Although it is fantastic that they could absorb so much from an article, the true remarkableness is that these people, young and old, are able to, at 11:00 on a Saturday morning, come together to discuss articles and community related topics. Truly, the KI EcoCenter has quite an impact on its community.
